- Seattle based hip-hop duo formed in 2008. Macklemore is the stage name for Ben Haggerty. Lewis met Macklemore at a photo shoot and they became fast friends. Lewis became a collaborator with Macklemore ever since that meeting.
- They released two studio albums. Their first, The Heist, was a huge success. They won 4 Grammy awards at the 2014 ceremony based on the strength of this album.
- Hit singles from The Heist include Thrift Shop, Can’t Hold Us, and Same Love. The first two reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 List, while Same Love peaked at #11.
- Same Love is considered an anthem for supporters of same-sex marriages. It was written by Macklemore due to his frustration with hip-hop culture and its treatment of gays. The photograph on the cover for the single shows Macklemore’s uncle John with John’s husband Sean.
- Their second album, This Unruly Mess I’ve Made, had only one hit single – Downtown reached #12 on the Hot 100 chart and #6 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
- The duo went on hiatus in 2017. Macklemore released two albums as a solo artist, and Lewis worked as a songwriter and producer for other artists.
