Djesse Vol. 4 – Jacob Collier

The MARK’S VINTAGE VINYL page features something from Mark’s collection of recordings from over the years. Most of it is on vinyl – hence the name – though there will be a few entries from his CDs (remember those?).

Djesse Vol. 4, by Jacob Collier

  • Fifth studio album by Collier released in February 2024.
  • British songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist has been lauded by many as one of the most creative and talented artists EVER! If you’ve never heard of him, don’t blame me – I’ve written about him twice already in my posts. He is particularly brilliant at harmonization – his six Grammy Awards have all been in the Best Arrangement, Instrumental and Vocals category, and each of the winning songs contain mind-altering harmonizations.
  • In 2018, Collier announced that he was releasing a series of four albums, each called Djesse, followed by Vol. 1, Vol. 2, Vol. 3 and Vol. 4. These albums show the progression of his growth as a songwriter. Vol 3 got a Grammy nomination for album of the year.
  • Vol. 4 dropped on February 29, 2024. I fired it up on my favorite streaming service, and I’ve listened to it at least 15 times already. It is amazing, breathtaking, brilliant – yes, I think it is fabulous!
  • Perhaps the most stunning piece is an a capella version of Paul Simon’s masterpiece, Bridge Over Troubled Waters. This version starts with Yebba singing the first few lines of the song. Yebba originally posted a one minute video of her singing the song in 2021. Collier saw it and liked it, and posted another version in 2022 where he added harmonization to it, with Collier singing at least 12 different simultaneous harmonies. It got such a positive response that he decided to include it in Djesse Vol. 4, with additional vocals featuring John Legend and Tori Kelly. Give it a listen – your jaw will drop!
