Billy Breathes – Phish

The MARK’S VINTAGE VINYL page features something from Mark’s collection of recordings from over the years. Most of it is on vinyl – hence the name – though there will be a few entries from his CDs (remember those?).

Billy Breathes by Phish

  • Sixth studio album by Phish, released in 1996.
  • Not familiar with Phish? They are a jam band that has been around for 40 years (already!), originating from Vermont. I discovered them randomly in the early 00s, and ended up with several of their CDs, as well as a concert DVD.
  • Phish had drawn numerous comparisons to The Grateful Dead, though Phish never cared for the comparison, and over time, they started to resent it. The comparison does work, if only because both bands are famous for taking four minute songs and turning them into twenty minute songs due to elaborate improvisations in concerts.
  • You won’t hear Phish songs on the radio – but their legacy as a live band has been well preserved by their dedicated fans. It’s really hard to find anything on YouTube that is less that 15 minutes long. But fear not – here’s a clip from a 2022 concert of the song Free from the Billy Breathes album that is ONLY eleven minutes long. To give you perspective – the cut on the studio album is a little under four minutes long. Check it out live!
