Gone Too Soon – Walter Becker

The AWESOME! page has random music stuff that I think is cool. You never know what you will find here!

Bass guitarist, guitarist, songwriter and founding member of Steely Dan, died September 3, 2017 at the age of 67 in Maui Hawaii. No cause of death has been announced.

  • Becker was the partner of Donald Fagen in the band Steely Dan – one of my most favorite artists. Becker co-wrote everything with Fagen, playing guitar since the formation of the group in 1972. See my post about Steely Dan from July 12.
  • Becker’s contribution to the writing tended to be the lyrics that were biting and sarcastic. Becker preferred to let Fagen be the frontman for the group – Becker rarely gave interviews or interacted with the audience at concerts (for that matter, neither did Fagen).
  • Their acceptance speech at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame award is hilarious. After making a few awkward comments, Becker opened it up to questions from the audience. Here’s the entire acceptance speech – all 1 minute and 33 seconds of it.
