Fetty Wap

  • Born Willie Maxwell II, born 1991 in Paterson NJ. He started performing in 2014, first as a rapper, and then adding singing.
  • “Fetty” is slang for money, and as he was known for making money, he adopted it as a nickname. “Wap” was added as a tribute to Gucci Mane’s alias, GuWop.
  • He was born with glaucoma in both eyes. Doctors were unable to save the left eye, which is fitted with a prosthesis.
  • Fetty Wap’s debut single, Trap Queen, was recorded in February 2014. By November of that year, it became a major hit, selling over 1 million records. He quickly released 3 more singles during the summer of 2015 – 679, My Way, and Again. With these 4 songs, he charted all 4 in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot Rap Songs simultaneously, the first performer to ever do this.
  • This success led to his first studio album, Fetty Wap, released in September 2015. The album debuted at #1 in the Billboard 200 chart. This led to 2 Grammy nominations in the Rap category in 2016.
  • In 2017, he has released several singles in advance of a new studio album, titled King Zoo, scheduled for release in June.
  • He refers to his music as “ignorant R&B.” Here’s a recent video of his song Flip Phone that contains many of the typical rapper excesses – booze, money and hot chicks.
